World university ranking released: Look at what position Indian universities landed

Yes, World University Rankings 2018 has been released by The Times Higher Education (THE) which is topped by once again the University of Oxford while California Institute of Technology and Stanford University grabbed the second and third position respectively.

Being Indian we are curious about the Rankings of Indian Universities but the sad news is that our Universities couldn’t make it to even top 200, be it IIT or IISC all were below 250th ranking.

Let’s know more about World University rankings by The Times Higher Education (THE):

As per the official website of THE, “The World University ranking is the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

What the editorial director of Global Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) has to say about performance of Asian Universities:

As leading universities in other Asian territories such as China, Hong Kong and Singapore are consistently rising up the rankings, in part thanks to high and sustained levels of funding, India’s flagship Indian Institute of Science moves further away from the elite top 200,” said Phil Baty, editorial director, Global Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE).

The editorial director went on saying about India not doing well in the rankings that, “really positive news in that India’s overall research income and research quality has risen this year, and the country’s world class university plan shows that it recognises the importance of investing in higher education.

Government policy strictly limits the number of students from abroad who can study in India and prevents international scholars from being hired into long-term faculty positions. However, India may recover on this metric because of its world-class university plan, which aims to provide additional funding for selected public and private universities for infrastructure and academics“, he added.

Here’s the list of Indian institutes and their rankings:

The list of 2018 has a change as compared to last year as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which was in the 201-250 band last year, has slipped further into the 251-300 band.

Only 30 universities of India contributed to the top 1000 list.

Take a look at this:

Here is the clear indication that our quality of education is inferior as compared to other big countries like China. Needless to point the reasons because there are many and complaining never provided solution to a problem. We have to take some initiative to raise the standard of our education rather than sitting and criticizing the government because government solely isn’t responsible for every problem of the country!
