Within few days of announcing it’s revamped ‘Status’ feature, Whatsapp has rolled it out to users worldwide, initially is was only available in Europe when it was announced. New Whatsapp status feature is available on Android, iPhone and Windows. Users in India has also received this update.
What is WhatsApp Status?
New Whatsapp status feature is the new way of engaging people on its instant messaging platform by Facebook. This will be replacing the old text form of status. With the new revamped WhatsApp Status feature, WhatsApp users can now change their status to a short video or photos.
“We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature,” wrote Jan Koum, CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp, in an announcement blog post earlier this week.
WhatsApp’s new revamped Status update, is totally inspired from Snapchat’s Stories, which was announced earlier this week by the company.
WhatsApp has pushed it out as a OTA update. You don’t have to search for an update on your mobile App Store or Google Play Store, as the feature has gone live on the app itself. Whatsapp Status is no longer that boring text-based thing, which no one bothered to read or care about, although people in India are known to update Status regularly.
Who Can See My WhatsApp Status?
As earlier there was option for Last Seen, similarly you can tweak who can see your new WhatsApp Status, the three options are My contacts, My contacts except, and Only share with.
By default, WhatsApp Status updates created by you are visible to all contacts. The Users who change their status with an image or video, will be also shown the view count on the app like Snapchat and Instagram stories do.
Tap the eye icon at the bottom of any Status update and you can view a list of contacts who saw the update. The feature, however, will need you to enable Read Receipts. When Read Receipts is disabled, WhatsApp notes, “Can’t see views because you disabled Read Receipts in Settings > Account > Privacy.”
The revamped Status also looks inspired by Facebook’s change of profile and cover pictures that sends a notification to other users. But WhatsApp Status however brings a more personal touch to the Status change as friends and families on the messaging app will be notified about the new status but you will receive replies privately. On Facebook and Instagram replies are however visible to each and everyone if your profile privacy is public.
